Piyaji Recipe | Bengali Onion Pakora | Piyaj ke Pakore Recipe | Kanda Bhaji Recipe

Piyaji or Peyaji is a very local term used specially in Bengal. This is another awesome snack recipe in Bengal which is also very famous in various parts of India in different name. E.g. you can find something similar in South India in the name of Onion Pakora, in North India “Piyaj ke Pakore” or “Kanda Bhaji” in Maharastra.

Personally I have tried all of them and I will say all of them are different at least in preparation point of view. In this article, Today I will be sharing about Bengali Onion Pakora or Piyaji recipe which I mostly prefer to have during my evening tea-time with office mates.

Yes, Piyaji is another popular cheap street food item in Bengal. The price of a single Piyaji is varied from Rs 2 - 3 in different parts of Kolkata. Near to my office, It's Rs 2.5 only. People love to have Piyaji with Muri/Puffed rice and tea, but for me it's only Piyaji & tea.

Well, as the purpose of this website is to make healthy snack recipes at home, I have stopped eating outside food items and started preparing them at home only. Me & my wife Manidipa, love to experiment various food items at home specially on weekends. So, let's explore the awesome evening snack recipe Piyaji, prepared at home taking care of all healthy factors.

Ingredients of Making Piyaji Recipe | Bengali Onion Pakora

  • 1 cup soaked chana dal / Bengal gram dal. Soak them overnight. You can also use masoor dal.
  • 2 large Onions finely chopped
  • 5-6 pcs green chilli finely chopped. You can add more if you love little extra spice like me. :)
  • 1 tbsp Besan + 1 tbsp flour / maida

How To Prepare Bengali Piyaji Recipe, lentil fritters recipe

  • First of all you have to grind the dal properly and make a thick paste from that.
  • Take the dal paste in a bowl and add all the ingredients, except water. Generally water is added in the previous part while grinding daal.
  • Now add maida & besan to make the mixture lighter. We have to make the mixture little solid, so that we can give a shape of Piyaji.
  • Now heat oil for deep frying in a large pan. Make sure the oil is enough hot before putting the Piyaji for frying.
  • Next, take small part of the dough in hand and then press them to spread a little and then put into the hot oil. One by one you can put couple together.
  • With a spatula change the side of each piyaji carefully and fry them till they turn dark. make sure they are not over fried.
  • Now soak the oil in a tissue paper and serve hot.
  • Your crunchy & crispy Piyaji is ready to eat, have fun.
Generally such deep fried food items are not at all healthy as mostly shop owners don't change the oil and also don't maintain much hygiene. Well, in that case, it is always better to prepare them at home with high quality oil and taking all healthy measures.

You will find it very comfortable after having even 2-3 more Piyaji if you prepare them at home, when you may need to have antacids or digene tablets to digest a single Piyaji outside. So, stay away from such foods having outside, rather prepare them at home very easily and enjoy your evening tea with family & friends.
